Ielts Academic Writing Task 2 Sample 68

The influence of celebrities on young people is significant. Some argue that celebrities should be more responsible for their actions and behavior, while others believe that individuals should take personal responsibility for their choices. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The influence of celebrities on young people is undeniably substantial, prompting debates regarding the extent of celebrity responsibility for their actions and behavior versus individual accountability.

On one hand, proponents argue that celebrities, as public figures with considerable influence, have a moral obligation to act responsibly and serve as positive role models for their fans, particularly young people. Celebrities’ actions and behaviors are often scrutinized and emulated by impressionable audiences, shaping attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors. Therefore, celebrities should use their platform responsibly to promote messages of kindness, integrity, and social responsibility, avoiding behaviors that may have harmful consequences or perpetuate negative stereotypes.

On the other hand, some contend that individuals, including young people, bear ultimate responsibility for their choices and actions, regardless of external influences. While celebrities may wield influence, individuals have agency and autonomy to make their own decisions and should be held accountable for the consequences of their choices. Moreover, placing excessive blame on celebrities for societal problems overlooks the role of broader social, cultural, and environmental factors in shaping behavior.

In my opinion, both perspectives hold merit, and a balanced approach is necessary. While celebrities should strive to be mindful of their influence and act responsibly, individuals must also exercise critical thinking and personal agency in evaluating and responding to media messages. Rather than placing sole responsibility on either celebrities or individuals, efforts should focus on fostering media literacy, resilience, and critical thinking skills among young people, empowering them to make informed choices and resist negative influences. Additionally, celebrities can leverage their platform for positive change by using their influence to promote messages of empathy, inclusivity, and social justice, thereby contributing to a healthier and more responsible media landscape.
