Ielts Academic Writing Task 2 Sample 55
Climate change is one of the most pressing challenges facing the world today. Some argue that individuals should take personal responsibility for reducing their carbon footprint, while others believe that governments and corporations should bear the primary responsibility. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
The issue of climate change prompts debates about where the primary responsibility lies for reducing carbon emissions: with individuals or with governments and corporations.
On one hand, proponents of individual responsibility argue that small actions collectively can make a significant difference in reducing carbon emissions. They advocate for lifestyle changes such as reducing energy consumption, adopting sustainable transportation options, and minimizing waste. Individual actions, they argue, can create a ripple effect by raising awareness, influencing social norms, and pressuring governments and corporations to take action.
On the other hand, advocates for government and corporate responsibility argue that systemic changes are necessary to address the scale and urgency of the climate crisis. They emphasize the need for policies and regulations that incentivize clean energy, promote sustainable practices, and hold polluters accountable. Governments have the authority and resources to enact laws, set emissions targets, and invest in renewable energy infrastructure, while corporations have the power to drive innovation, scale up sustainable technologies, and transition to low-carbon business models.
In my opinion, both individuals and institutions share responsibility for addressing climate change. While individual actions are important for raising awareness and driving behavioral change, systemic change requires coordinated efforts from governments, corporations, and civil society. Governments play a crucial role in setting ambitious climate targets, implementing policies to reduce emissions, and providing incentives for renewable energy investment. Similarly, corporations have a responsibility to prioritize sustainability, reduce their carbon footprint, and invest in green technologies.
Ultimately, addressing climate change requires collective action at all levels of society. By working together, individuals, governments, and corporations can create a more sustainable and resilient future for generations to come.
