Ielts Academic Writing Task 2 Sample 75

The use of renewable energy sources, such as solar and wind power, is on the rise. However, others argue that these sources are unreliable and expensive. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

The rise of renewable energy sources like solar and wind power has sparked debates regarding their reliability and cost-effectiveness.

Proponents of renewable energy argue that these sources offer numerous benefits, including environmental sustainability, energy independence, and long-term cost savings. Solar and wind power generate electricity without emitting greenhouse gases, helping to mitigate climate change and reduce air pollution. Moreover, renewable energy sources are abundant and inexhaustible, making them a more sustainable alternative to finite fossil fuels. Additionally, advancements in technology have led to significant reductions in the cost of solar panels and wind turbines, making renewable energy increasingly competitive with traditional sources.

However, opponents of renewable energy raise concerns about its reliability and affordability. Solar and wind power generation is intermittent and weather-dependent, meaning that energy production can fluctuate based on factors like sunlight and wind availability. This variability can pose challenges to grid stability and energy supply reliability, particularly during periods of low renewable energy output. Additionally, the upfront costs of installing solar panels or wind turbines can be significant, although they are often offset by long-term savings on energy bills.

In my opinion, while renewable energy sources may have limitations in terms of reliability and upfront costs, the benefits they offer far outweigh these drawbacks. Investing in renewable energy is essential for transitioning to a more sustainable and resilient energy system that mitigates the impacts of climate change and reduces dependence on finite fossil fuels. Moreover, continued advancements in technology and policy support can address concerns about reliability and affordability, making renewable energy an increasingly viable and attractive option for meeting our energy needs in the future.
