Ielts Academic Writing Task 2 Sample 85

In some countries, the gap between the rich and the poor is widening. What are the causes of this trend? What measures could be taken to reduce the gap? Share your opinion and provide relevant examples.

The widening gap between the rich and the poor in many countries can be attributed to various factors.

One significant cause is globalization, which has led to the outsourcing of jobs and increased competition in the global labor market. This has disproportionately affected low-skilled workers, leading to stagnant wages and higher unemployment rates among the lower-income population. Additionally, technological advancements have further widened the gap by favoring those with specialized skills and education, while leaving others behind.

Moreover, government policies and tax systems often benefit the wealthy, exacerbating income inequality. Tax cuts for the rich, lax regulation of financial markets, and loopholes that allow the wealthy to evade taxes contribute to the concentration of wealth among a small segment of society.

To reduce the gap between the rich and the poor, policymakers could implement several measures. Firstly, progressive taxation policies could be enacted to ensure that the wealthy contribute their fair share towards social programs and public services. Additionally, investing in education and vocational training programs can provide opportunities for upward mobility and bridge the skills gap. Strengthening labor laws to protect workers’ rights and ensure fair wages is also crucial in addressing income inequality.

Furthermore, social welfare programs such as universal healthcare, affordable housing, and income support can help alleviate poverty and reduce the disparities in access to essential services.

In my opinion, addressing income inequality requires a comprehensive approach that tackles its root causes while providing support to those most in need. For example, countries like Norway and Denmark have implemented progressive tax policies and robust social welfare programs, resulting in lower levels of income inequality compared to countries with less redistributive policies. By prioritizing equitable economic growth and social justice, governments can create a more inclusive and prosperous society for all citizens.
