Ielts Academic Writing Task 2 Sample 128
Many cities around the world are facing increasing levels of traffic congestion. Some people believe that the construction of more roads and highways is the solution, while others argue that investing in public transportation is a better approach. Discuss both views and give your opinion.
The issue of traffic congestion in cities has spurred debates over the most effective solutions, with proponents of building more roads and highways facing off against advocates for investing in public transportation.
Supporters of constructing more roads and highways argue that it is a direct solution to alleviate traffic congestion. They believe that expanding road infrastructure provides additional capacity to accommodate the growing number of vehicles on the road, reducing congestion and travel times.
Additionally, proponents contend that more roads offer greater flexibility and convenience for commuters, allowing them to travel more efficiently and access areas that may not be served by public transportation.
On the other hand, advocates for investing in public transportation argue that it is a more sustainable and efficient approach to addressing traffic congestion. They believe that expanding and improving public transit systems, such as buses, trains, and subways, encourages people to choose alternatives to driving, thus reducing the number of vehicles on the road.
Additionally, public transportation offers environmental benefits by decreasing air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions associated with private car usage. Moreover, proponents highlight the potential economic advantages of public transportation, including cost savings for commuters and increased accessibility to jobs and opportunities for those without access to private vehicles.
In my opinion, investing in public transportation offers a more holistic and sustainable solution to traffic congestion in cities. While building more roads may provide temporary relief, where increased road capacity attracts more vehicles, eventually leading to congestion once again.
In contrast, public transportation encourages mode shifts and reduces reliance on private cars, contributing to long-term congestion mitigation, environmental sustainability, and equitable access to transportation services.
Therefore, governments and urban planners should prioritize investments in efficient, reliable, and accessible public transit systems as part of comprehensive strategies to address traffic congestion in cities.
