Ielts Academic Writing Task 2 Sample 83

Many people believe that the use of mobile phones should be prohibited in public places such as libraries and restaurants. Do you agree or disagree with this view? Provide reasons and examples to support your opinion.

I disagree with the notion that the use of mobile phones should be prohibited in public places such as libraries and restaurants. While there may be instances where excessive phone use can be disruptive, a blanket ban is not the most effective solution.

Firstly, mobile phones serve as valuable tools for communication and information access. In libraries, for example, smartphones enable patrons to quickly search for information, access e-books, or communicate with colleagues or classmates for research purposes. Similarly, in restaurants, mobile phones can facilitate social interactions by allowing individuals to coordinate plans, share photos, or engage in conversations with friends and family members who may not be physically present.

Moreover, imposing a ban on mobile phones in public places may infringe upon individuals’ rights and autonomy. People have legitimate reasons for using their phones in public, whether it’s for work, emergencies, or personal communication. Prohibiting mobile phone use altogether could be overly restrictive and impractical.

Instead of outright bans, it would be more constructive to establish guidelines and etiquette for mobile phone usage in public spaces. For instance, encouraging users to keep their phones on silent mode, avoid loud conversations, and be mindful of others’ privacy and comfort can help mitigate potential disruptions.

Additionally, certain establishments may choose to designate specific areas where phone use is permitted or restricted, allowing individuals to make informed choices based on their preferences and needs.

In my opinion, while excessive mobile phone use can sometimes be disruptive, a complete prohibition is neither practical nor necessary. By promoting responsible phone etiquette and establishing reasonable guidelines, public places can maintain a balance between accommodating mobile technology and ensuring a respectful and comfortable environment for all patrons.
